Coming Events

There are some events planned around town over the next several weeks that may be of interest to the geek in your household.

NAB Radio Show
Sept. 17-19
Austin Convention Center

This is a bit of a big deal. The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) is the primary industry organization for the companies that beam all that fabulous programming into our living rooms. Unless you are in the industry you probably won't be going (it's insanely expensive), but it's cool to know they picked Austin for their annual conference.

Thu., Sept. 18, 7p.m.
Cafe Mundi

If you haven't heard of it already, think of Dorkbot as a science fair with beer. It's fun, and, in spite of the beer, is usually very kid friendly.

One Web Day
Mon., Sept. 22, all day
Cafe Caffeine

It's billed as a sort of "Earth Day" for the web. People are invited to come down and talk about how the 'net matters to them. With the right turnout this could be a lot of fun. Anybody plan on taping or streaming this?

Maker Faire Austin
Oct. 18-19
Travis County Event Center

Last year was the first Maker Faire in Austin, and it must have been successful because the producers are bringing it back. Makers are people who make stuff. Last year I saw robots, blacksmiths, textiles, all sorts of things. It's truly amazing. The mistake I made last year was setting aside just an afternoon for the event. It would have taken at least a full day to get through everything. I won't make that mistake again this year.
